Clarinettist Sebastian Manz, soprano Christine Whittlesey and the Ludwig Chamber Players also feature on the recording, which was made in cooperation with SWR Kultur and WDR. Six works in different instrumentations from trio to octet, composed between 1999 and 2020, trace Johannes Maria Staud's continuous compositional development and make his distinctive style with its diverse references tangible: ‘Sounds reminiscent of light tones, smells and flavours; alchemistic elements in various states of aggregation; fragmented linguistic utterances and their musical resonance or even once a (seemingly) abstract number - the chamber music works on this CD traverse a wide field of allusions and associations typical of Johannes Maria Staud's oeuvre. ’ (NEOS)
The recording may therefore also be a suitable prelude to Johannes Maria Staud's upcoming major world premiere: On 6 October, his composition Die Schöne Müllerin/These Fevered Days, written at the suggestion of the great Schubert interpreter Christoph Prégardien, will be heard in Nuremberg. For his new piece, Johannes Maria Staud has orchestrated Schubert's song cycle for 19-piece ensemble and interlocked it with seven new songs based on poems by Emily Dickinson.
